This is a very easy project. Don’t get too hung up on making the stripes perfectly rigid. They can wiggle a bit. The fabric behaves best if it is ironed dry when damp. This puts some of the stiffness back and makes it easy to sew the bias edges. Be careful not to tug on the seams as you ease them under the machine presser foot.

In the Japanese home tatami mats are used as a surface for sitting, sleeping, and walking on. Light enough to be carried by an adult, mats are composed of a thick rice straw core, a soft reed cover, and two borders of cloth or synthetic tape which protect the sides. Tatami are approximately 3 feet by 6 feet, about the size of a single bed, and l 3/4-2 1/2 inches thick.

I found this recipe in an old cookbook given to me by my mother-in-law. The light, delicate pancakes have a nice citrus flavor that the tangy orange sauce complements.

1-1/4 cups all-purpose flour
3 tablespoons sugar
2-1/2 teaspoons baking powder
3/4 teaspoon salt
1 egg
1 cup orange juice
1/4 cup milk
3 tablespoons vegetable oil
2 to 3 teaspoons finely grated orange peel
ORANGE SAUCE:
1/2 cup sugar
1 tablespoon cornstarch
1/4 teaspoon salt
3/4 cup water
1/2 cup orange juice
2 tablespoons butter
1 tablespoon lemon juice
2 to 3 teaspoons finely grated orange peel
